Northumbrian Water has started a four-month flood protection improvement scheme this week for the East Herrington area.
The work, worth £910,000, will involve constructing a total of 300 metres of new sewer pipe and upsizing a further 165 metres of existing sewer pipe.
The water company will also build an underground storm water storage tank capable of holding 450,000 litres of water in times of heavy rainfall, to be returned to the sewerage network afterwards.
Danny Coyne, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said:
“We appreciate that flooding is distressing for customers and reducing the risk is one of Northumbrian Water’s main priorities.
In times of heavy rainfall, 13 properties at Long Meadows, Broadmeadows and Launceston Drive have experienced internal and external flooding and this scheme aims to offer some protection for the future.”
